Experienced Teaching Assistant in the Communication Field

I am a Communications scholar with 7 years of rhetorical academic writing experience. I have been awarded an Associates degree focused in communication from The Missoula College in 2017. Also, a Bachelors degree in Communication, with a focus on rhetoric from the University of Montana in 2020. Plus, I have completed 3 semesters of my Communication graduate program, at the University of Montana. Rhetoric and rhetorical writing is what i specialize in. During my education I have learned the history of rhetoric and its practice. I have read articles from the ancient practitioners to modern rhetorical theorists. I have focused the vast majority of my bachelors and masters on rhetoric and took all the available courses in rhetoric during undergrad. Which lead me to focus on rhetoric in grad school, and why I have chosen to write a rhetorical thesis (work in progress). I am a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communications Association honors society for undergraduates. I completed my Bachelors degree with a GPA of 3.77 and Magna Cum Laude honors. I can help you write, edit, and apply APA format to your paper. I can help talk out topics and subtopics and selecting a rhetorical style or frame to structure the argument. I can help ask questions to refine and zero in on your idea and how to capture your argument effectively and concisely. I can help you navigate library databases during your research process. And teach you about sifting through academic journal databases and how to pick articles relevant and helpful to your argument.

Tutoring on Your Terms: Social Studies, Academic Writing, SAT, and English Language Learning

Academic Writing is a core skill in communication and the basis of most university programs. It is an exercise in critical thinking, clarity of expression, and logical reasoning, and it is a passion of mine to help students to develop these skills. During my 23 years of full-time teaching, I have taught academic writing skills to thousands of students. While a great deal of my experience in teaching academic writing stems from my years as an AP and IB MYP/DP teacher, every class I taught was a reading and writing intensive class regardless of the subject matter and the level of the students. I have taught academic writing in the most rigorous of courses offered as well as in courses dominated by ELL and ESL students who were recent immigrants to the United States or who live in Ecuador, where I spent 5 years teaching. All students can learn to be effective writers. My expertise in teaching academic writing spans the gamut. I have years of experience teaching students from a wide variety of backgrounds how to write expository essays including: compare and contrast/comparative essays, change and continuity over time essays, point-counterpoint essays, Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, and basic argumentative and persuasive essays, among others. At the heart of all of these types of academic writing are clarity and precision in the use of language, conciseness, logical reasoning, and, of course, citation. Development of these skills is my expertise.

Brett Chosewood
Alto, GA

Teacher, Tutor, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Brett Chosewood, and I am an English and Language Arts teacher from Georgia in the United States. I have taught both locally and abroad (in countries such as China, Dubai, and Mexico) for over twelve years. In addition, I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and communication. My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont College. I am also currently pursuing a PhD in English Composition from Old Dominion University. I love teaching and tutoring because I get to work with students to meet their individual needs. Each student is unique, and I truly love helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. My style of teaching involves building a strong rapport with my students, determining their individual needs, and tailoring my sessions with them to meet those needs. I try to get feedback from and assess students regularly to ensure they are understanding lesson concepts and progressing appropriately. My greatest accomplishment was developing the entire English curriculum for a high school in Sichuan, China. I taught there for a year, and when I began my job, there was no curriculum. I assessed the needs of the students, developed the curriculum for ESL and Literature, and set appropriate bench parts. The result was that all students saw a significant increase in their TOEFL scores. My desire is to bring the same effort and success to your students!
